Objective
To provide expertise on products and environmental analysis.
Functions
The Directorate will perform the following functions:-
(i) To carry out analytical. Instrumental testing and research activities to ascertain safety and quality of food and food products, drugs. Herbal medicine. Tobacco and tobacco products. Cosmetics. Chemicals and chemical products,occupational health and environmental samples for the purpose of safeguarding public health and the environment.
(ii) To develop, validate and review analytical methods for analysis of food and drugs, microbiology. and environmental laboratories;
(iii) To prepare. Implement and review of the Standard Operating Procedures for analysis of food and drugs, microbiology. and environmental laboratories
(iv) To conduct applied research on matters related to analysis of food and drugs microbiology and environmental laboratories.
(v) To participate in Proficiency Testing (PT) Schemes to facilitate accreditation of the analytical methods;
(vi) To prepare technical specifications for purchase of laboratory glassware, reference standards, culture media, chemicals and reagents. reference books and consumables;
(vii) To provide scientific advice and advisory services on matters related to food and drugs, microbiology. and environmental laboratory activities;
(viii) To conduct emergency inspection. sampling and laboratory analysis of food. drugs, herbal medicine, chemicals and chemical products. occupational health samples and environmental samples on matters of national or public interest:
(ix) To carry out Quality Control Monitoring and Surveillance in water and waste water treatment facilities, pollution sources, geological sites and chemical substances; and
(x) To assess the departmental risk, analysis and implement mitigation measures accordingly.
